May 7th is the date it becomes a reality
Real ID is a form of identification that meets enhanced federal security standards. It was established under the Real ID Act of 2005, which set minimum security requirements for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards. This act was created in response to the 9/11 attacks to improve the reliability of identification documents.
Starting May 7, 2025, a Real ID or another acceptable form of identification will be required to board domestic flights, access federal facilities, or enter nuclear power plants.
Real IDs are marked with a star in the upper corner, making them easy to identify.
If you don’t have a Real ID, you can use alternatives like a passport, military ID, or other federally recognized identification. To obtain a Real ID, you must visit your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and provide documents proving your identity, Social Security number, residency, and lawful status.
A Real ID differs from a regular driver’s license in several key ways:
- Enhanced Security Standards: Real IDs comply with federal security requirements established by the Real ID Act of 2005. Regular driver’s licenses do not meet these standards.
- Usage: While both allow you to drive legally, Real IDs are also required for boarding domestic flights, accessing federal facilities, and entering military bases starting May 7, 2025.
- Identification Mark: Real IDs feature a star in the upper-right corner, indicating compliance with federal standards. Regular driver’s licenses lack this mark.
- Documentation: Obtaining a Real ID requires additional documentation, such as proof of identity, Social Security number, residency, and lawful status
