NY again increasing fares on buses, trains – and everything else.

This change is due to go into effect on January 1st, 2026. EZ PassNY will increase by 52 cents on major bridges. . .

The reusable OMNY card will increase from $1 to $2 next year.

Phase out the MetroCard completely by the end of December, FORCING all subway and bus riders to use OMNY.

Yep, a fare hike is on the horizon for NYC transit riders. The MTA has approved raising subway and bus fares from $2.90 to $3.00, with the change likely taking effect Jan 4th, 2026. This increase is part of a broader budget strategy and coincides with the phaseout of MetroCards in favor of the OMNY tap-and-go system.

Here’s a quick breakdown of what’s changing:

  • Subway & Local Bus Fare: $3.00 per ride

  • Express Bus Fare: Rising from $7.00 to $7.25

  • OMNY Weekly Cap: No more than $36 for unlimited rides in 7 days

  • MetroCard Retirement: Sales end December 31, 2025; OMNY becomes the standard

Commuter rail fares (LIRR and Metro-North) and bridge/tunnel tolls are also set to rise by up to 8% and 7.5%, respectively.
